Founded in January and March 1956 by community volunteers in Green Bay, the National Railroad Museum is one of the oldest institutions in the United States dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of our nation's railroads. NRM enriches the lives of others by offering the experience of the American railroad, while participating in exhibitions, programs and special events. The Wisconsin National Railway Museum, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is the only museum of its kind in North America and offers visitors a comprehensive look at the operation of the railroad from 1880 to 1916. The National Railroads Museum enriches the lives of others by offering American railway experiences while participating in exhibition programs or special events.

The Wisconsin National Railway Museum, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, was founded in 1956 and recognized as such by the United States Congress in 1958. When the group became more organized, they succeeded in getting the museum recognized by Congress as the National Railroad Museum in 1957 and the National Museum of American Railways in 1959.

All in all, a visit to the National Railway Museum is a must if you have the chance - look at such an institution in this country. There are a number of other museums in the United States, but they are rare, and there are few of them in Wisconsin, especially in Oshkosh.
